Genre, Audience and Representations

I have finally decided on my genre, the audience I will be aiming at and the social group(s) that I will be representing.

Genre

The genre I have chosen is thriller. I have chosen this because of my passion for thrillers and my interest in psychological and mentally unstable characters. My favorite films revolve around the thriller/mystery genre, so I also hope to bring in a dash of mystery.
Films that directly relate to the ideas I have in mind are Se7en, Fight Club and American Psycho. However I have chosen to look at a few other films that aren't particularly thrillers but their title sequences contain elements that I would love to adapt into my own sequence, for example Donnie Darko, Edward Scissorhands and Dorian Gray.

Audience

The audience I have chosen to aim my title sequence at is people aged 16-30. It will appeal to teenagers who find psycho's and clinically insane/mentally unstable people intriguing and most adults up to approximately 30.

Representation

The social group that I will portray in my title sequence is mentally unstable people, who have psychopathic tendencies.

BLOOPERS

Here are some hilariously funny outtakes from our two narrative projects, I urge you to watch them!

Bloopers from The Prisoner and Haematemesis from Rhiann Quinn on Vimeo.

Recording our Evaluation

We have just recorded our evaluation of Haematemesis in Fibonacci (drama room)

We talk about what went well, what didn't, along with our target audience and what we have learnt.

I will be uploading a bloopers video very soon, which contains outtakes from both The Prisoner anf Haematemesis!

Editing Haematemesis

Editing Audio

We have encountered some problems with the audio on some of the shots. On one of the pan shots, the crank lever that we used to turn the camera made a really load squeaking sound. We are attempting to silence this sound as much as we can however it is proving to be quite difficult.

The Editing Has Begun

Vlog 1 from Rhiann Quinn on Vimeo.
Here is a short VLOG of us editing the length of the shots to ensure that the conversation flows smoothly. We made sure that dialogue was not cut off at the beginning or the end of the shot to make sure that the editing looked sophisticated.
Using Adobe Premier Pro is becoming like second nature to me. I understand the basics of the software and I am advancing into the more complicated side of it, including audio editing and audio transitions. Even though editing the audio is extremely hard I am still finding it very interesting and I am engaging well with the idea of it.

Filming Day

Today, we started and finished filming this project!
First of all I would like to thank Sam and Josh for participating in this and cooperating very well whilst filming. Despite some shots taking on average around 10 attempts due to fits of laughter, we managed to get the shots we hoped for. I am extremely pleased with the shots as I think they flow very well and the acting was suberb.
Naturally, Rhiann took the job of camera operator and I took the job of the 'Director' if you will. Rhiann was the one standing in awkward positions, zooming, cranking and focusing the camera to take the shots and I was the one who was telling the actors where to stand and reading off the storyboard sheet to ensure we got all the shots we planned. We both work very well as a team because we both know exactly what we want to get out of each shot and we are able to understand what each other means without too much deliberation.
We were having a few troubles with the noises that the camera makes. When we used the zoom function, it created a sound that you can hear in the audio of the shoot. However this problem will be able to fixed whilst editing on Premier Pro, Also when using the stick to pan the camera, it squeaked numerous times, this is also something we will have to edit out at a later date.

Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork...

Call Sheets

These are the call sheets we gave to our actors so they knew all the information about the day of the shoot.

Storyboard!

Here are the completed storyboard sheets.
I have noted on the part where he opens the door that we need to use action match. I have written it on to remind myself during filming that we need to make sure that each shot of him opening the door matches the previous one in order to create good continuity.

I am very excited to start filming, not long now!

We have finalized our idea!
Our new project is called...

HAEMATEMESIS

The outline of the scenario is that there is an urgent meeting between two world leaders. They are discussing a viral pandemic of Ebola, talking about what to do and they come to a FINAL SOLUTION, which is not the most moral of solutions,,,
Here is a link to the wikipedia page of the definition of haematemesis if you would like to know more about what it is - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hematemesis
Long story short it is the vomiting of blood. We decided to use this as our title as it captures the sinister element of Ebola. It also tells the viewer that the genre is somewhat medical.

We have looked at costumes, location, actors and we have almost completed the storyboards after finishing the script. I am very pleased with how the script sounds and now by adding the different shots we have a clear idea of what we want this film to look like.
As for the setting, we hope to use a room in the Science Learning Center which would be perfect for what we have planned however this all depends on whether it is already in use or not. I will be able to confirm the location soon,
For the actors, we have decided on Sam Bryan (who starred in our previous film, The Prisoner) and Joshua Morgan who we have not worked with yet so we are very excited to see how this one turns out.
With regards to props, we will need a stick, a wall map and some artistically made photographs of patients with Ebola inside a brown envelope. We also need a document that contains the title of the FINAL SOLUTION. Me and Rhiann will be hand making the photographs and the document.
The costumes came quite easy to us because it is pretty obvious that men in a high power would be wearing a suit.  Both characters will be dressed in a suit.

The next time I post on here I will be posting the finished storyboard!

New Project

Hello again!
It's been a while but I have now recieved my next project. This is going to look at continuity. Aswell as the basic idea of characters wearing the same costumes when they should be and keeping the props the same, I will be looking at the 180 degree rule and action match.
I am working with Rhiann again and this time we are able to come up with our own context, we even get to write our own script!
We have been given the basic outline of the scene which is:
-Character opening a door
-They cross the room
-They sit on a chair facing the other character
-Then they exchange dialogue
We have came up with a very interesting idea and have been toying with a few different scenarios, however we think we have a final idea. (All will be revealed shortly)

Now, back to the continuity features of this project. I have just learnt about the 180 degree rule after not understanding it one bit. It is am imaginary line that the camera cannot cross when showing dialogue between two or more people. If the line is crossed then it disorientates the viewer however if it is not crossed the conversation looks real and flows much better. It ensures that the eye line of the characters are meeting so that they actually look like they're talking to eachother. We unconsciously used the 180 degree rule in the previous project called The Prisoner, however this new project will give us the opportunity to perfect it and use it all the time rather than just by fluke.
The action match rule ensures that when you have seperate shots of the same action, they flow correctly and so that the shot literally matches the previous shot. This can be tricky to obtain but I am confident that we will manage to do this when we have it on our mind the whole time filming.
It won't be long before I report back with more information on the narrative of the project.
